Dee Lewis, IIC graduate, owner of the Mur Salon shares some insights for aspiring and seasoned stylists.
✨What motivated you to create your own space?✨
After working every type of salon from corporation, franchise, small business owned, in a nursing home, in other peoples home and in my own home, it was time for me to create a space for others to grow the way that fits them best. Not everyone has a clear path to success, because that looks different to everyone. “It is my purpose to help guide stylists to see what theirs is.”
✨How did you come up with the name?✨
The Mur Salon is named after my rescue puggle, Murray who I rescued from the Vernon dog pound. Vernon is the city of where my self employment journey started by renting a chair. Murray and I had a rough upbringing so I wanted to cultivate something like MUR so every individual knows their past doesn’t define them.
✨Where are your locations?✨
I have my Branford location for my independent stylists, “renters” and my Guilford location for my commission team based stylists.
✨What are your specialties?✨
I specifically specialize in vivids, and each stylist independent or not has their own niche of specialties. We have a couple lady barbers, some blonding specialists, color experts, and beauty gurus. We cater to a wide range of guests. My focus is more on managing my business’s and being available for my team, rather than doing hair.
✨What advice would you give to students just starting in the industry?✨
Any advice I would say to someone just starting is to not give up on your dream no matter how impossible you may think it is at the time. You have to be consistent to get where you want to be, and yes I mean everyday even if you don’t see instant results. It does pay off!
